I grew up with Jaimee Arroyo (then, Novak). We were childhood friends and remained friends well into adulthood.

Years ago I was married (to a woman) and had just come out of the closet. While still a difficult and painful process, my ex and I were supportive of each other during this initial period of separation and amicable divorce.

Jaimee caught wind that I had publicly come out as gay, so she called up my (then) wife and tried to convince her that “no one is born this way”. She went on to say that I needed to go to conversion therapy** and that we should remain married. Many other GOD members at the time echoed these sentiments.

Jaimee Arroyo is homophobic.

Jaimee is the co-owner and face of Hopewell Family Care on social media where she spreads “alternative” medical misinformation. I hope people continue to educate themselves and make informed decisions regarding what businesses they financially support.

**Conversion therapy is any emotional or physical therapy used to “cure” or “repair” a person’s attraction to the same sex, or their gender identity and expression. Providers claim these therapies can make someone heterosexual or “straight.” But there’s no evidence to support this. Medical and mental health experts have rejected conversion therapy practices as dangerous and discriminatory for decades. It not only doesn’t work, but could also lead to:

  • Depression

  • Anxiety

  • Drug use

  • Homelessness

  • Suicide

In extreme cases, the practices may be violent or torturous. Conversion therapy is sometimes called “reparative therapy” or “ex-gay therapy.”

Globally, around 13 countries have some ban or regulations against licensed mental health experts practicing conversion therapy, including Brazil, Norway, Argentina, and Germany.
